Cities need 'basics' to attract business Cities need to offer quality basic services if they want to attract business, research by the Centre for Cities has revealed.

It recommended cities and national government provide adequate housing, improved transport links and speedier planning processes.

Research manager Hannah Brown criticised overlapping support schemes and called for improved services.

"Even at a time of economic uncertainty, innovation is a key ingredient for business growth," she noted. "But supporting innovation in Britain's cities isn't about gimmicky policy initiatives or niche business schemes."

"Instead, cities need to get the basics right - delivering good transport, better housing and faster planning decisions - to help businesses to innovate and compete."

The report recommended the government drop its plans for new partnerships, which it claimed would "add to the complexity".

Modern businesses look for reliable travel connections and modern telecoms infrastructure when considering moving into commercial property.
