Govt sets office efficiency standards

This article reveals the government’s new plans to reduce carbon emissions with carbon-neutral computer systems for its offices.

The government has announced it is to lead the way in establishing carbon neutral computer systems for its offices.

The Cabinet Office has proposed a plan, which will reduce around 20 per cent of its 460,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.

"Worldwide, computers are responsible for the same quantity of carbon emissions as the airline industry. It is a serious problem that requires a serious solution," Cabinet Office minister, Tom Watson said.

Government workers around UK and in offices in London will be told to switch off computers when not in use, and reuse old machines.

By turning off idle PCs, it claims it will save the equivalent CO2 of that created by 40,000 cars.

New commercial property designs have evolved to incorporate advanced materials, light sensitive panels and even micro-generation technologies.

Companies buying or renting commercial property in London could see their bills lowered if they opted for environmentally-friendly commercial property designs.
